Are you aware of the fact that acadian fishermen already knew Belle-Île-en-MER under the name Gaspereau since the XVIIe century ?
An Acadian village was named Gaspereau to recall the abundance of Gaspareau (a sort of herring), fished by Amerindians of the Micmac nation. Before the Acadians were expelled by the English in 1755 (« Grand Dérangement »), The village Gaspereau had 50 inhabitants.
This recalls the rich and eventful history of this region.
